Pretty Incredible Experience

Pretty incredible experience, getting “Baby” the lesser crested cockatoo. Unbelievably small, I knew when I saw her pictures I might have the perfect “shoulder hound” as Chris would say.

I appreciate the effort this organization puts in to safely place the animal. Baby had some anxiety issues and they made sure that she would be “at home”.

First visit was in Vancouver at the “Parrot Perch” unbelievable store with knowledgeable staff. Lots of birds there too. Chris showed up with his personal bird and three others. He explained the program and how it worked as well as the expectations put on adopting parents. All three of the birds he brought with were good fits in their own right. Chosen by Chris after a lengthy phone interview.

Like I said, I kind of knew going in that Baby would be my choice. My assumption was correct. Baby is by no means quiet. She’s as demanding as any cockatoo, although at 19 years old she’s a little easier to deal with. She sits, content, on my shoulder as I paint, draw, or watch the news. She has a few tricks, and when she gets excited, or hungry, has a few key phrases.

After our visit and expressing my choice to Chris, we decided to meet later in the week at my house, three hours away, poor guy. He showed up, he’s a night owl as am I. He brought his bird as well as everything needed for Baby. Cage, perch, food items, etc. The perch is made by Veterans and is priced very nicely. He left Baby with a new toy as well.

During his visit he was able to check out my home, he’s definitely not looking to place birds with breeders. We placed the cage. Baby seemed excited to be there. She hopped up on my shoulder and pretty much stayed there through the chatter and he paperwork. Chris shares his knowledge and is very direct. He brings with him printed instructions and suggestions. No guesswork needed. He also brings some prepared food for your bird and gives you the suggested recipe. It was very simple for me to learn to food prep for her.

I’m sure there’s instances where things don’t work out as planned with placements. This one, however, went off without a hitch. I hate to leave the house. She’s a good addition and I’ve enjoyed getting to know her.

I appreciate the bird rescue and parrots for patriots. If you’re looking for a pet like this I would without a doubt recommend adopting. There are so many birds out there that have been abandoned simply because their owners didn’t know what they were getting into.
