Meet Kiwi
Kiwi is an exceptionally beautiful greater sulphur-crested cockatoo with a truly unique personality. He is highly conversational, appears to understand context, and verbally interacts with just about anyone. His vocabulary includes more than 50 individual words and approximately 15–18 phrases.
Kiwi strongly prefers men and will be placed only with an experienced male adopter, preferably a man who lives alone. Because he has a history of attacking women, he is not a suitable match for a female adopter. We are seeking a male handler with at least one year of hands-on experience working with a hormonally aggressive cockatoo.
At one time, Kiwi was fully tame. However, after reaching maturity, he began attacking his previous owner’s wife and became unpredictable. At times, he may also lash out unexpectedly at men, so his new adopter must be skilled at reading his body language and reacting quickly.
During his time in our care, we have cautiously allowed Kiwi to step up onto our hands. However, we remain aware that he could lash out at any moment and deliver a serious bite. This is one of the main reasons he needs a cockatoo-savvy handler.
Kiwi must not be placed in a home with children. We learned that, after a traumatic event in his previous home, he became more aggressive and possessive toward anyone who spoke to or touched his preferred male caregiver.
On a lighter note, whenever someone approaches Kiwi’s cage, he enthusiastically asks to shake hands! He will happily extend his foot through the cage and say, “Shake!” as many as three times if you do not respond right away. He will then grasp your finger, shake firmly, and hold on tightly until you pull away.
He may then surprise you by asking, “Do you have any money?” He is a blast! Kiwi has a wonderfully quirky personality and is extremely sharp-witted. As you walk away, he often calls out, “Monkey Butt!”
Kiwi is at his best when he has an audience or is in a room full of other animals. Around dogs, he confidently tells them, “Sit!” “Stop it!” and “Get down!” He sometimes even commands, “Shut up!” When another bird gets too loud, Kiwi quickly reprimands it with, “Shut up!” “Knock it off!” or “Be quiet!”
It is obvious that Kiwi has lived with dogs, as he often says things such as, “Stop!” “Sit!” “Be good!” and “Lay down.” One of the funniest things he says when you walk by is, “Hi, Monkey Butt!”
Kiwi’s humor is spot-on, and his personality shines brightest when another animal is being noisy. He has no problem stepping in to discipline it!
His previous owners were wonderful and taught him many positive things to say. Every now and then, Kiwi says, “Bad bird,” but we always try to turn that around by reassuring him, “Good bird!” He very rarely uses a naughty word.
When we call him a “good bird,” he sometimes responds with a shy, “Okay.”
Kiwi is extremely animated and often asks whether he can go outside.
Again, Kiwi will be placed only with an experienced male cockatoo owner. Although he was once fully tame, he will need patient, one-on-one trust-building with a skilled male handler.
He has a healthy appetite and loves fruits and vegetables, but more than anything, he needs a dedicated and experienced companion.
Kiwi’s adoption fee is reasonable and includes his very large cage and our generous care package. However, we will rehome him only with someone who has substantial cockatoo experience and does not share walls with neighbors, as cockatoos can be extremely loud.

We cannot accept advance phone calls, and we do not answer questions without a completed adoption application. This policy ensures that we are speaking only with qualified adopters, not casual shoppers.

Kiwi’s adoption includes:
- His large, 40-inch-wide cage
- A generous care package
- A large, new, custom-made parrot carrier

It is crucial that you monitor your email and respond promptly when we contact you. Applicants who do not respond to our request to schedule a phone interview will not be considered serious adopters.
